TFW: The Awakening ReviewEditorial by NineThreeNine - Friday, April 27, 2007 If you know anything about the history of Diablo II modding you will have heard of TFW: The Ancients for patch 1.09. This one mod had an unprecedented surge of downloads during its days on the Phrozen Keep. With the release of patch 1.10 the authors: Deathscythe and SlientX, disappeared.
Now forward to the present, since 2006 Myhrginoc -- with the authors consent -- has been updating the mod to patch 1.10. Further help, from yours truly (GAQ), means progress continues at a steady pace. As it stands, skills, item types, cube recipes, fury gems, and much more has been recreated for the new patch. Plus, Myhrginoc has put his own spin on things with an updated skill system; this fits in well, as both the previous versions featured evolutionary changes to vanilla Diablo's system.
At the moment the mod does suffer from some of the same problems as the original, namely the mod is easier in the end game than at the start. Despite this, one must state this mod is still in an early stage of development and, because of this, balance is behind features in development.
Although the mod is still in the Alpha stage of development, it is a stable and fully playable mod. Feature wise it still is able to stand up well against many mods for both 1.10 and 1.11. Some of Myhrginoc's achievements in code editing, such as the changes to the /players command, shine as exclusive features for a Diablo mod.
With a Beta release not too far off, things look bright for a mod that is already easily above average.
