Poker: World Series Final Table: Jerry Yang

Major Tournaments

Jerry Yang has been running strong since the start of the final table broadcast; at one point Yang held over 70 million chips, with his nearest rival at just over 20 million. Now Yang has not been playing great poker and the professionals 'on the ESPN rail' have been pointing this out.

Now Yang has been making some strange calls. Putting large amount of chips on the line calling his opponents all-ins with A9o and JTo. Thus, they are claiming his opponents should simply wait till they get a great hand and raise into Yang who will probably call them.

However, there is a flaw in doing so. Yang is also playing very aggressive pre-flop and mixing it in with some small ball -- by stealing on the flop -- and this has been working well for him. In doing so he has been recouping his losses -- such as the 5 million he lost to Alex Kravchenko -- within a few hands. Two hands after the loss to Kravchenko, Yang gained 3 million chips by typical small ball play against Tuan Lam. His pre-flop play has been maintaining, and building up, his stack.

I am not saying Jerry Yang is a great player, but playing against a player you might term an 'aggressive calling station' can be very frustrating. When playing four handed good cards you cannot just wait for good cards, which is what you need to beat a player like Yang.
