I might be a little behind the times here, but as you may know I reported on BackupHDDVD and how it could crack HD-DVD's 'unbreakable' encryption system -- AACS. Well I think I need to mention the progress of AAC encryption's downfall. On the 13th of February DailyTech reported that theProcessing Key had been found. This key is reported to be the one key to crack any AAC protected content -- HD-DVD OR Blu-Ray.

Previously, every HD movie needed its own unique key in order to be decrypted; however, the Processing Key can be used to decrypt any HD movie to date, on either format.

On another intresting note, AnyDVD HD has been released and it can defeat any AACS based HD DVD Copy Protection.

Slysoft do state that their methods of decrypting AACS are different from those previously found in the open source community, and those which use the Processing Key. Thus SkySoft use an independent and unique method in AnyDVD HD:

“The way AnyDVD HD addresses and solves the problem doesn't have much in common with the discoveries of individual members of the Open Source community in reading AACS keys from the USB bus... As one can expect from SlySoft, our solution works fully automatic with all known titles while the so-called hacker tools require laborious reading out of memory or the USB bus. This is not to say that their efforts are completely fruitless; it’s just that ours need to be user-friendly. It’s just that simple.”
