Samsung have given more information about their SSD drives, which I talked about here. It seems the price of the unit, which had previously been reported at around 0 per 4GB unit, was gross over estimate. Samsung state to DailyTech that the units will cost significantly less, perhaps even $100 less. This may mean that the iRam system will be reduced in price to remain competitive. However, it is not all good news. Samsung also stated that the SSD's will use Parallel ATA, insted of the newer Serial ATA. I can't really understand why an item, aimed for the enthusiast market, would be released as a PATA unit -- especially given Intel are no longer supporting PATA on their new motherboads. Samsung aren't alone in using older standards the Gigabyte iRam was released for PCI, Aegia PhysX Card was also a PCI card, and almost every DVD drive uses PATA... Surely, modern devices should be coming out strictly for the most modern mainstream interface? We need companies to stop creating devices for PCI, PATA, and even AGP (to the screams of those on socket 754). Then motherboards can slowly phase out these older interfaces leaving us with more room for extra slots -- have you noticed you hardly get any PCI-E slots on a motherboard? Those wanting to use older components should be able to purchase a conversion device that lets them use their PCI devices, or what not. Looks like PCI and co are here to stay...
