AMD Opteron 10/30/2006 Price Cuts

Processors

Yesterday AMD announced price cuts of between 17-47% across their Opteron product lineup. These price cuts affect AMD’s Opteron processors for Socket 940, 939, AM2 and 1207 chipsets. So, this was another widespread cut by AMD to counter Intel's Conroe based chips. The most important of these cuts for the enthusiast user will be the Socket 939 Opteron 100 series price cuts which cover the entire 100 series -- these cuts will be in the range of 19-46%.

Here is a table of the 100 Series dual core chips price cuts:

185 $759 $435
180 $593 $325
175 $438 $259
170 $355 $201
165 $255 $165

It is good to see the budget overclockers choice chips -- the Opteron 165 and 170 -- being on the receiving end of reasonable cuts. This should aid AMD stay competitive in that small market; however, these cuts are more important for AMD's corporate buyers where performance is not such a great issue.

Even the single core chips will see their price tags reduced, most notably the budget Opteron 144 which fell from $111 to $87.
